Big Winter Community Drum Circle
This Big Winter Drum Circle will mark the end of over ten years of Community Drum Circles at Halifax' Square Chapel and will be on Sat Dec 17th at 6.30pm.
I set up this community event in the year 2000 and until the last few months have facilitated a circle there every month since that time..in recent times I have started a circle in Hebden and Steve Hill has taken on the Halifax circle.
Here is Steve's message to you for this final circle.
So - let's bring Christmas in with a bang! I invite participants past and
present, DCFs past and present, mentees, drum teachers, mums, dads, carers
and kids to come together in celebration.
Come and support the groove, and watch the wonder, and facilitate if you
wish - please let me know. I'd like it to be a celebration of DCF-ing, as
well as a good old jam.
I'll be there setting up from 17h00 if you'd like to haul a few drums.
However, I'm asking even roadies to pay, 'cos it costs a lot to heat the
room.
It's £5/£3 - pay on the door - and there's mulled wine and mince pies (and
tea, coffee and booze) in the bar afterwards.
Here's your map:

Put it in the diary now!!
Yours drummingly,
- Steve Hill

July 2010
Halfway through the year and I have to say I am as busy as I ever have been.![]()
Work on the schools front has been excellent and I have been fortunate to work alongside Ibrahim 'Sens' Sagna again in combining African Drum and Dance. Sens is an inspiration to work with and I look forward to more collaboration in schools with him.We are also playing more together with the Kajamor's and this coming half of the year should hopefully see us get into the studio and record our demo album.
Festival season is upon us once more and I am in the envious position of being able to attend some of the best as a Musician and Workshop facilitator...This year saw me travelling to Beatherder for the first time where the Kajamor Family were very warmly recieved....At Small Nations and Stainsby I provided the ever popular community drum circles and enjoyed my time at both these great 'Little' festivals.
Photos should be with me soon...fingers crossed.
On a down note I am sorry to have to say that for the time being Maghribibeat is no more...Mo has moved on and we are looking at possible replacements...Not an easy task.
The rest of the summer lies ahead with some well deserved downtime and a chance to catch up with family and friends.
September will hopefully see the continuation of the good run of school work and the beginning of an early Years Project for Sens and myself in Calderdale with Creative Partnership hosts Cape UK.
Don't forget to book yourself a place on the UK Playshop where you can learn to Facilitate Community Drum Circles this coming October at the beautiful Wiston Lodge.

We held this years programme at www.wistonlodge.co.uk/ and it was a huge success. 50 participants from around the Globe came together and shared an experience of community building through Rhythm.Combined with the stunning venue and surrounds it has to go down for me as the best Training I have ever been a part of.
Roll on next year. ukplayshop.com/

James Brown 1979-2008

During my recent stay in Senegal I heard the news that James had passed away, after contracting Malaria during his visit to Guinea. I like many others was stunned by the news and deeply saddened. James was a wonderful human being and I am sorry that our new found friendship and mutual love of Djembe and all things West African has been cut short.
I will miss him.
My thoughts are with his family and those close friends who were with him on the Trip.
These words are from the Poet Rumi that say what I cannot.
At last you have departed and gone to the Unseen.
What marvelous route did you take from this world?
Beating your wings and feathers,
you broke free from this cage.
Rising up to the sky
you attained the world of the soul.
You were a prized falcon trapped by an Old Woman.
Then you heard the drummer's call
and flew beyond space and time.
As a lovesick nightingale, you flew among the owls.
Then came the scent of the rosegarden
and you flew off to meet the Rose.
The wine of this fleeting world
caused your head to ache.
Finally you joined the tavern of Eternity.
Like an arrow, you sped from the bow
and went straight for the bull's eye of bliss.
This phantom world gave you false signs
But you turned from the illusion
and journeyed to the land of truth.
You are now the Sun -
what need have you for a crown?
You have vanished from this world -
what need have you to tie your robe?
I've heard that you can barely see your soul.
But why look at all? -
yours is now the Soul of Souls!
O heart, what a wonderful bird you are.
Seeking divine heights,
Flapping your wings,
you smashed the pointed spears of your enemy.
The flowers flee from Autumn, but not you -
You are the fearless rose
that grows amidst the freezing wind.
Pouring down like the rain of heaven
you fell upon the rooftop of this world.
Then you ran in every direction
and escaped through the drain spout . . .
Now the words are over
and the pain they bring is gone.
Now you have gone to rest
in the arms of the Beloved.
